What
do you want your postcard to accomplish?
Before
you do anything else, like pick the color of your postcard, design a
killer logo, or write a snappy headline, you need to answer this
question:
What do you
want to accomplish with your postcard mailing?
Do you want to
generate sales leads, announce a sale, launch a new product, open a new
store, or just simply thank them for doing business with your company?
Once you have clearly defined your reason for a postcard mailing, you
can move to the next step.
Who
are you going to send your postcard to?
Now that
you know why you're sending out postcards, it's time to determine who
you are going to mail to. These are the most common ways to develop a
mailing list for your offer:
- Existing
customers (The best list you can mail to)
- People who have
shown interest in your business or products.
- Compiled lists
of people in your target market. (You may select people by area in
which they live, gender, age, income, children, homeowners, etc.) If
you have not started to develop a mailing list for you business, now
is the time to start.
Writing your postcard copy.
Ok,
you know what you want to accomplish, and you know who will get your
mailing. Here are must have's for your postcard.
1. A Powerful
Headline
You've got about five seconds to impress your prospects so they'll
read the rest of your postcard–make it count with a strong headline.
The easiest way to do this is to put yourself in the shoes of your
target audience and answer this, "What is in it for me?" What
is the number one benefit of using your company's services, coming to
your store, or attending your event? Determine that and put it in your
headline.
Examples:
"Save Money on Your Printing"
"Save 90% on your vitamins"
"Annual Sale! 20-50% Off Everything!"
"Maximize Your Investment Dollars"
2. Benefits,
Benefits, Benefits!
Now it's time to unload the rest of your arsenal. Let your prospects
know about the other ways they can benefit. Do you offer the highest
quality, unmatched customer or free delivery? Start asking yourself
what sets you apart from your competition, and list it on your
postcard.
3. Make an
offer they absolutely cannot refuse.
Give your prospects a reason to come in, call, email, order, get off
the couch–whatever it is you want them to do, get them to do it
right now. By giving them an incentive like a huge discount, a free
gift or complimentary service, your chances for getting them to react
are better.
4.Tell them
what to do.
Your potential customers now have an incentive to do business with
you, but they're going to need just a little more prodding. Give them
a "call to action" so there's no question about what to do
next.
Here are
some great ways to close the deal:
"Pick up the phone and call right now!"
"Come down today and get your free gift!"
"Bring this postcard in this weekend and we will take 15% off
all your purchases!"
5. Give them
plenty of ways to contact you.
Now more than ever, American's want convenience. The easier you make
it for people to reach you, and the more options you give them, the
sooner they will contact you. Along with your standard phone number,
try including a toll-free number, fax, email and web site address.
